CPSC Bans Drop Side Cribs

The law banning all manufacturing and sales of drop-side cribs, which passed unanimously in December by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), goes into effect June 28, 2011. This new law, designed to increase the safety standard of cribs sold in the United States, applies to full-size and non full-size cribs.

The law also requires stronger crib slats and mattress supports as well as more rigorous testing on the quality of hardware used for the crib's construction.

It is important to note that although the new law prohibits hotels and childcare centers from using drop-side cribs, both have until December 28, 2012 to purchase cribs that meet the new regulations, and are allowed to use their current drop-side models until that date.

According to the CPSC, drop-side cribs have been blamed for deaths to at least 32 infants and toddlers since 2000, and have been suspected in another 14 fatalities.

If you are using a drop-side crib, the CPSC advises to check the crib's hardware to be certain it's working properly and has not been recalled by the manufacturer.
